FLORENCE FROM OHIO
IN DEVELOPMENT
How does a first-generation, Ohio-born and educated artist of color, bear the burden and responsibility of interpreting her Chinese culture for others? Filmmaker Stephanie Wang-Breal, literally and figuratively, steps into her mother Huang JingYing, aka Florence Wang’s, St. John Knit power suits to interrogate how daughter and mother play into, and disrupt, the model minority stereotype.
Florence from Ohio is a heartfelt, genre-twisting film about assimilation in a changing America told through the lens of a first-generation daughter and her Chinese immigrant mother.
This project is supported by the Sundance Institute and Creative Capital.
